The question is not only ‘Can I tell this story?’ The better question is: ‘Why me, why this story, and what does it cost the people in my frame?’
— Tamara Perkins
Whose Story Is This? Co-Creation in Documentary Practice is a free, open textbook by documentary filmmaker and educator Tamara Perkins. Across eight chapters, it guides readers from their own positionality to a finished short documentary made in partnership with the people on screen, drawing on twenty years of co-creative practice.
It is written for film students, instructors, and independent and community filmmakers. Each chapter combines short readings, case studies, and hands-on activities that build toward a documentary prospectus, an ethical toolkit, and a two-to-five-minute film.
